In this session we will be looking at the concept of SEL (social-emotional learning). We will discuss what SEL can contribute to the wellbeing of your young learners, and look at ways of applying its key concepts to the primary ELT classroom with the aim of helping children build resilience, self-esteem and value-based behaviour as a basis for lifelong learning. We will look at practical examples to demonstrate how SEL can be combined with fun learner engagement.
About Herbert
Herbert Puchta is an award-winning author and teacher trainer. He has been a plenary speaker at numerous international conferences, and has conducted workshops and given plenaries and seminars in more than 50 countries. For almost three decades, he has carried out research into the practical application of findings from cognitive psychology to English Language Teaching. Herbert has developed and co-authored a number of bestselling coursebooks, and written numerous articles and resource books. Herbert was president of IATEFL, the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.

Schools around the world recognise the importance of using graded readers in class. There is, however, a strong need for teachers to understand how to best use these materials. Beginning with why we want students to read for pleasure, this webinar will cover the importance of teacher preparation, extended warmups, ideas for using graded readers and how to engage students with story characters and moral dilemmas. As co-author of the Thinking Train primary series, Gavin Biggs will show how to use graded readers to create a real sense of excitement in class. Furthermore, he will look at practical ways to help students feel confident and prepared when reading for pleasure.
About Gavin
Gavin Biggs has been working in education for over 20 years, teaching and managing international educational projects with government, academic and corporate partners. Gavin has a degree in Psychology from the University of Exeter and his professional interests include the effective use of stories in learning and motivational psychology in the classroom. He is the author of Maze Stories, a series of interactive teen adventure books, the brand-new Listen In mystery series for active listening, and co-author of The Thinking Train – a series of readers devised to enhance key thinking and language skills for young learners.

SILENCE AND NOISE:
MODES OF BEING IN THE CLASSROOM
Classrooms are often noisy places or deadeningly quiet. But while noise can stimulate creativity it can also sometimes stifle it, whereas the right kind of silence used thoughtfully can facilitate deep processing (cognitive and emotional engagement). We will explore the advantages and disadvantages of both. Maybe it has something to do with individual preferences? (Examples from American Jetstream 2nd edition)

He has taught in Mexico and The United Kingdom and offered talks and workshops in many different countries. Of all the things every single English teacher and English learner has to face, the irregular verb list has to be the most universal. It's everywhere: in teaching materials, on promotional material for language schools, and in cheat sheets for language exams. The irregular verb list is so 'normal' in English language teaching that we never think that much about it, and yet this aspect of English has some fascinating history and even new developments. We look at these, and revisit ideas and activities on how to teach this most ubiquitous of grammar points.

She's currently working as a learning designer for a start up called FlipTalk and writing a book on lesson planning.
